EDM Producer Laurence Holcombe teaches you how to craft standout tropical house tracks from scratch in this in-depth video tutorial series. He uses Logic Pro X but the information and techniques shown apply to any DAW and workflow.
Laurence starts with a brief introduction of the genre, and then dives right into making the beat. He shows you how to generate and tune the perfect kick, and how to layer samples to make them stand out even more. He then adds the extra elements such as snaps, hats, and shakers to fill out the groove and make it sound and feel more organic.
Next, Laurence develops and programs the chord progression, showing you how different chord progressions affect the mood and groove of the song. Laurence then teaches you how to craft a tropical house style topline melody, tying it all together.
With the beat and melody covered, Laurence focuses on the bass. He explains how to program the right kind of bassline for tropical house, and how to make sure it sits well with the groove and the melody.
Laurence then arranges the song to be as exciting as possible, adding effects to give the track that extra ear candy that draws the listeners in. After that, he creates fills and makes some edits to really move the song forward.
That leads into the video on the final mixdown, in which Laurence makes all his last minute tweaks and adds some secret sauce, and the final master, in which he masters the track for release to the public!
